Overview: Not all of our clients are selling on their website - there are many practical uses for a database-driven website other than e-commerce. An excellent example of such is a website we built for the Children's Memorial Hospital's Faculty Practice Plan. This Chicago-based network of 220+ physicians wanted profiles of each doctor to be online, with useful information for potential patients such as the physician's specialities, education, practice location and insurance/HMO information.
The challenge of the home page was to develop a site that had a colorful, light feel to it representing the care that must be taken when treating children, yet maintain a professional, organized look as well to emphasize the excellence of their healthcare system. We used rounded images, children's icons, and swatches of color to deliver the young, fresh look they desired while making it very easy, nonetheless, to find the important information visitors came to the site to find.
The main focus of the site is the Physican Finder Search Engine. The concentric circles on the home page funnel the visitor to this area. Clicking on it, the user is taken to the search function that uses the advantage of having a database-driven website to its fullest extent. Physicians can be found by name, specialty, conditions seeking treatment, location or even by insurance plan. All bases have been covered.
Upon finding the physicain of their choice, visitors are taken to the doctor's profile. All pertinent information about the physican's practice is noted on this page. If any information changes (such as insurance plans being accepted), the corrections can be made instantly to the database and the site is updated with no HTML programming, and no additional cost to the client - probably the best reason to use a databse when running a website, e-commerce or not!
